METHODOLOGY
The Herald’s spring 2022 poll was conducted over the course of three days from April 12 to April 14 across four major locations on campus: Page-Robinson Hall, the Sciences Library, Faunce Arch and outside the Sharpe Refectory. The poll only includes responses from undergraduate students. Poll responses were collected through a combination of Google Form responses and paper forms. All responses on the online form were required, and The Herald did not include results from paper forms that were not fully completed. The Herald collected 1,033 complete responses to its poll. Because of a technical error that did not allow respondents to select multiple responses in the “concentration area(s)” section, only 875 responses were counted in data relating to concentrations. For all other questions, all 1,033 responses were used. The Herald collected poll responses anonymously to preserve the privacy of all students who participated. Only select senior members of The Herald’s staff had access to the complete raw data for analysis to preserve this privacy.
The margin of error is 2.8% with 95% confidence. We did not reweight the dataset to reflect the demographics of the Brown undergraduate population. All margins of error were calculated with 95% confidence using N=7,349 to represent Brown’s total undergraduate population. The margins of error for specific subsets are as follows:
- 5.2% for first years
- 4.8% for sophomores
- 6.7% for juniors
- 9.9% for seniors
- 3.9% for no financial aid
- 5.2% for grants covering some costs
- 8.9% for grants covering all costs
- 3.0% for non-varsity athletes
- 9.5% for varsity athletes
- 3.1% for non-legacy students
- 8.3% for legacy students
- 3.1% for non-first generation students
- 7.8% for first generation students
- 3.1% for domestic applicants
- 7.3% for international applicants
- 3.0% for students not involved in Greek life
- 9.8% for students involved in Greek life
- 3.0% for students living on campus
- 8.8% for students living off campus
Statistical significance was established at the 0.05 level. All cross-tabulations are statistically significant.
